Booker T. Washington’s concept of compromise likely carried into Greenwood’s perception of itself, and certainly into the modern recreation of Greenwood’s cultural history as “Black Wall Street.” But Washington calling Greenwood “Black Wall Street” is apocryphal, perhaps perpetuated to mythologize an all-Black district that needed no such falsehood to secure its place in history. The phrase was originally coined as “Negro’s Wall Street.” The possessive is as noteworthy as the word “Negro”: This belonged to us. And us was birthed by a Black woman, as are all things born good, grand, and gorgeous in this world. If Eve was the first woman and Africa the birthplace of man, we all are born of a Black woman.
